Please join us Tuesday the 30th as guest speaker Dr. Robert S. Feranec, Curator of Mammals at the N.Y.S. Museum in Albany, focuses on understanding how ecology changes in mammals over time. At the height of the last Ice Age, twenty-five thousand years ago, nearly all of New York State was covered with ice. As the climate began to warm and the ice melted, the environments and the animals that inhabited them changed. Tundra plants gave way to spruce forests, and reindeer gave way to mammoths, mastodons, giant beavers, and ground sloths. The Ice Age culminates with the arrival of people and the extinction of many of the Ice Age animals.
The program is free and open to the public. For further information, please contact the Library at 696-3423. – Funding provided by Town of Lake Luzerne and Warren County Occupancy Tax -

Historic Fort Ticonderoga
Heidi teRiele Karkoski, Curator of Landscape, will be the guest speaker. Learn about new plant introductions, themes and designs for the upcoming season. The walled King’s Garden was originally designed in 1921 by leading landscape architect Marian Coffin. The formal elements – a reflecting pool, manicured lawn and hedges, and brick walls and walkways – are softened by a profusion of annuals and perennials, carefully arranged by color and form. Heirloom flowers and modern cultivars are used to recreate the historic planting scheme. The program is free. Please use the side door for entry into the community room. “40,000 Years of Herbal Medicine or So Simple a Caveman Can Do It.”
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25
This presentation takes a look at the evidence on archaeological sites for the use of herbal medicine – starting with the Neanderthals 40,000 years ago and working up to the Greek physician Hippocrates who practiced about 400 BC. This program gives a look at how plants were used as medicine through the ages – it does not give advice on how to use herbs medicinally.
Guest lecturer Marie Ellsworth is a member of the NYS Archaeological Association, and has participated in digs in Vermont and New York. She has been interested in medicinal plants since childhood and collects traditional remedies.
The program is free and open to the public. Please arrive before presentation begins. For further information please contact the Library at 696-3423.

In the early 20th century seasonal flooding of the Sacandaga and Hudson Rivers caused great damage to the downstream communities located in the Hudson Valley. The need for 4-season flow control for the benefit of manufacturers, power producers and communities also was a major factor in the eventual construction of the Conklingville Dam in the Sacandaga River. The resulting flooding of the Sacandaga Valley in the Spring of 1930 took a large toll on the local way of life. To this very day, the flooding continues to create controversy about taxes, beneficiaries and property rights.
Local resident and AARCH (Adirondack Architectural Heritage) Board member Willem Monster will tell the story of the creation of the Lake, the politics around the battle between the HRRD and the FJ&G railroad and the transformation of the Sacandaga Park resort community owned by the railroad.
The program is free and open to the public. For further information please call the Library at 696-3423.
