Next Book Club Meets May9

“In The Garden Of Beasts” Love , Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin
by Erik Larson
The New York Times Book Review describes “Larson is a marvelous writer…superb at creating characters with a few short strokes”. Erik Larson is a favorite with the Book Club, a few months ago having read his bestselling book “The Devil in the White City”.
In this month’s choice Larson writes of Hitler’s Berlin. The main character, William Dodd, becomes America’s first ambassador to Germany during the time Hitler, New Germany and the Third Reich come to power. As the story unfolds, the excitement and intrigue of Dodd’s experience turns to horror and violence. Described as a very readable nonfiction perspective of a sinister era.

Posted by rgames on 24th January 2013

February 14, 2013
4:00 pmto5:00 pm
Runaway is a book of extraordinary stories about love and its infinite betrayals and surprises, from the title story about a young woman who, though she thinks she wants to, is incapable of leaving her husband, to three stories about a woman named Juliet and the emotions that complicate the luster of her intimate relationships. In Munro’s hands, the people she writes about–women of all ages and circumstances, and their friends, lovers, parents, and children–become as vivid as our own neighbors. It is her miraculous gift to make these stories as real and unforgettable as our own.
The Book Club meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at 4-5pm. All are welcome.

Get your new book now for the meeting in March. The book is Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. From Publishers Weekly
“Readers with an eye on European politics will recognize Ali as the Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated). Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as “brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women” had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. … Apart from feelings of guilt over van Gogh’s death, her voice is forceful and unbowed—like Irshad Manji, she delivers a powerful feminist critique of Islam informed by a genuine understanding of the religion.”
and from the Washington Post “she describes herself as lucky: “How many girls born in Digfeer Hospital in Mogadishu in November 1969 are even alive today?” she asks rhetorically. “And how many have a real voice?” To that, it’s worth adding another question: How many women with Hirsi Ali’s experience of radical Islam have emerged to tell their stories? And how many can do so with such clarity and insight? Infidel is a unique book, Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a unique writer, and both deserve to go far.” This book promises to be a remarkable reading experience. At the end you will have the opportunity to discuss aspects of the book with others at the book club. The discussion should be about as good as the book! Get yours today. Call the library and ask us to reserve you a copy.
