Great River of the Mountains: The Hudson

Posted by chedger on 23rd June 2009

June 24, 2009
7:00 pmto8:30 pm

Lucey Bowen will talk about the book “Great River of the Mountains:  The Hudson,” by photojournalist Croswell Bowen.

The book of photographs and prose documenting the Hudson River was first published in 1941 and has recently been reprinted by his daughter.

Considered the visual counterpart to “The Hudson” by folk historian Carl Carmer, GREAT RIVER OF THE MOUNTAINS contains an introduction by Carmer.  The new facsimile edition has a foreword by the author’s three daughters and is being published in conjunction with the Quadricentennial of the Hudson & Champlain discoveries.

Lucey Bowen, who has spent two years researching, revisiting and rephotographing the places her father and Carl Carmer visited and wrote about, will speak about selected images form the book and her journey.

Her father had traveled from Manhattan to the source of the Hudson and wrote letter to Carmer describing the interesting characters he was meeting:  shad fishermen, loggers, folksingers and storytellers, and arranged interviews for Carmer.

The new book is Nothing Like It in the World by Stephen E. Ambrose.  It is about the men who built the transcontinental railroad from 1863 to 1869.  It is about the investors who risked their buinesses and money; the enlightened politicians who understood its importance; the engineers and surveyors who risked, and lost, their lives; and the Irish and Chinese immigrants, the defeated Confederate soldiers, and the other laboreres who did the backbreaking and dangerous work on the tracks.

Order your book today!  The book club is free and open to the public.
