Hudson Valley Bald Eagles: Our Greatest Ecological Success

Posted by CLaBarge on 13th July 2012

July 19, 2012
7:00 pmto8:31 pm

Mark your calendars for next Thursday!   Tom Lake from NYS DEC will be our guest speaker. Since  1782, the Bald Eagle has been our national bird; the last 230 years have been difficult for them.  Tom will explain how across the centuries how the Bald Eagle went from being an honored symbol to a target of human ignorance and neglect.  This downward spiral culminated in the mid-20th century with their extirpation from NYS from the effects of DDT.  They were subsequently placed on the Federal Endangered Species List.  The final chapter in this story finds the Bald Eagle rising from near ruin to their present day abundance and a recovery so complete that you may see an eagle any day of the year, anywhere in the Hudson Valley.

The program is free and open to the public.
