The Red Tent

The Red Tent

The book of the month is The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. If you already read the book why not come to the next meeting in April? It would be an easy way to see if you might like to come regularly.
The Red Tent is a story about Dinah from the Bible. Told in Dinah’s voice, this novel reveals the traditions and tourmoils of ancient womanhood-the world of the red tent.

These and other flowers are available. Due to popular demand we are doing our yearly flower power fundraiser.  People who have purchased flowers in previous years have told us the flowers all come up.  They are big, beautiful and are some of the “best in the garden”.  In addition to flowers, this year you can purchase top hat blueberries, strawberry and tomato plants. When you order through their website, they will ship the items directly to you and give the library credit. Please click on the link above for more information.  This campaign ends April 23,2010.    Yeah spring is really coming!

Get your new book now for the meeting in March. The book is Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. From Publishers Weekly
“Readers with an eye on European politics will recognize Ali as the Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated). Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as “brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women” had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. … Apart from feelings of guilt over van Gogh’s death, her voice is forceful and unbowed—like Irshad Manji, she delivers a powerful feminist critique of Islam informed by a genuine understanding of the religion.”
and from the Washington Post “she describes herself as lucky: “How many girls born in Digfeer Hospital in Mogadishu in November 1969 are even alive today?” she asks rhetorically. “And how many have a real voice?” To that, it’s worth adding another question: How many women with Hirsi Ali’s experience of radical Islam have emerged to tell their stories? And how many can do so with such clarity and insight? Infidel is a unique book, Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a unique writer, and both deserve to go far.” This book promises to be a remarkable reading experience. At the end you will have the opportunity to discuss aspects of the book with others at the book club. The discussion should be about as good as the book! Get yours today. Call the library and ask us to reserve you a copy.

Stewarts Dam Oral History Project

Posted by chedger on February 12th, 2010

The Hadley-Luzerne Public library was awarded a grant from the Hawley Foundation for Children. With these funds, the Hadley-Luzerne Public Library, along with students from the Hadley-Luzerne Middle School, is beginning an oral history project concerning the construction of the Stewart’s Dam in Hadley. We would like to interview people who were involved in construction of the dam and also people who have/had family members who were involved. Also, if you have photos of the work in progress we will be able to include that as well.
DVDs will be produced from the interviews and will be given to the Towns of Hadley and Lake Luzerne. DVDs will also be given to other local libraries and local historical societies. There will also be a presentation at the Library by the students who will be working on this project.
Interested people may contact John Plantier, Coordinator, at 696-4285 or the Hadley-Luzerne Public Library at 696-3423.

The New Computers are HERE!!!

Posted by chedger on February 3rd, 2010

The fundraiser was a success! We purchased the new computers.  They are here at the library, installed and ready for your use!  They are wonderful.  They are quick and have all the latest software.  Of course you can get your email from any number of online sites such as yahoo, hotmail or gmail.  They have the newest version of Word, so you can also use the computers to write letters and/or your resume.   They also have Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.
Again a big THANK YOU goes out to all those businesses and people who came through to support the library and provide these computers for everyone.  Without their help this would have been impossible.  Please remember to support these businesses when you shop.  These businesses put money back into YOUR community to make life better for all.
