Bookclub News

Posted by chedger on September 2nd, 2010

September 14, 2010
6:30 pmto8:00 pm

On Tuesday the book club will be meeting to discuss the #1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander Smith.

Also on Tuesday the book club will be picking up their new book, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. The story is set in the early part of the Great Depression.  Jacob  was working in a circus and he was lucky to have any job at all. Water for Elephants is that rare novel with a story so engrossing, one is reluctant to put it down; with the characters so engaging, they continue to live long after the last page has been turned.

Watch for Sara’s new book out soon, The Ape House.

Inside Scoop on Rachael Ray’s Reading !

Posted by chedger on August 1st, 2010

Hi,
Since Rachael Ray has so generously given to the library, I thought it might be interesting to find out her reading habits.  I did forward a list of questions to her offices and got a response. So here are her responses.

What were your favorite books from your childhood?
My favorite books were the Casual Observer, when I was little, I thought it was an actual profession. Funny enough, I grew up to do that for a living. I have a cloth bound set of the entire Beatrix Potter collection. I loved the Stinky Cheese Man, The Velveteen Rabbit and The Chronicles of Narnia. (I still have all of these from childhood).

Do you have any favorite memories of reading?
I remember not being able to put a book down and reading under my bed covers with a flashlight so my mother wouldn’t make me go to sleep.
What are  your favorite leisure books now?
I love thrillers and I’m currently reading The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, by Stieg Larsson. Ever since I was a little girl, you were more likely to catch me watching cop shows and thrillers rather than cartoons. I think thrillers are the best ever written.
I also enjoy reading bios of people whom I admire. I am reading Hitch-22: A Memoir, Christopher Hitchens’ autobiography.

Writing a Personal Narrative Memoir

Posted by chedger on July 20th, 2010

July 22, 2010
1:00 pmto3:00 pm

Every person has a story to tell!  Will your children or grandchildren really know who you are?  You do not have to be a famous person, or an author to write a memoir.  It doesn’t have to be a full-length autobiography to be a wonderful legacy to leave to children, grandchildren or other family members.  Louis Alexander will show you how to write your memoir.  In a one day session, you will learn, step by step procedures in how to get started and become self-published. Mr Alexander is a retired high school principal.  He currently lives in northern New Jersey and serves as an Adjunct Professor of Education at Seton Hall, Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickinson Universities.
