Come in the month of July to see Melissa Hood’s exhibit. She was born and grew up in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Melissa has pursued many hobbies. She is an avid horseback rider, hiker, and traveler. She is also a novice kayaker. Her love for the outdoors has been prevalent in her work for many years. Her family has a second home in Long Lake, NY where she has spent countless hours exploring the Adirondack culture and mountains.
Her art career began at an early age. She began taking art classes in high school and attended Pratt’s summer art program. Her art teachers entered her in to a variety of high school art competitions, many of which she was awarded for. She was a winner of the congressional arts contest which granted her scholarship money to Savannah College of Art and Design and Georgian Court University. Her artwork was displayed in Washington DC for a year.
After high school she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Education from Georgian Court University. Melissa received a Master’s degree from New York University in studio art. She did three semesters of graduate courses in Europe. During her studies she spent six weeks attending the 2011 Venice Biennale and one week at the 2012 Documenta. Her international experience has broadened her artistic research and offered her invaluable involvement with contemporary art. Her work has been exhibited twice in Venice, Italy and most recently at the Grimmuseum in Berlin, Germany.
After completing her Master’s degree she has put her efforts into continuing her career as a teacher and an artist. She recently became an adjunct professor at Ocean County College. Melissa considers herself an emerging artist and looks forward to a lifelong experience of artistic discovery.
